After years of speculation about a new Jaguar E-Type, it appears the on-again, off-again, on-again sports-car really is off-again – and this time it sounds like the decision is final.

As Jaguar celebrated the 50th anniversary of the original E-Type's (pictured) debut at the Geneva motor show, many pundits believed the company would use the milestone to whip the covers off an all-new E-Type.

Instead came words from Jaguar's chief designer that will ensure the original remains a classic.

"There will not be a new Jaguar E-Type," Jaguar chief designer Ian Callum told the Carsales Network. "And there never was a plan to have one at this show.

"Maybe a few years ago we might have thought about it, but not now. We all have a special place in our hearts for the E-Type but it's a classic shape, the world's moved on, and we're working on more exciting stuff."

Callum wouldn't elaborate on what "more exciting stuff" involved but the Carsales Network understands Jaguar is still working on a small sports-car – although clearly it won't be dubbed E-Type.

"The E-Type was designed in an era where cars could look like that, but that's not so easy to do today because of [crash safety] regulations."
Jaguar could unveil a concept version of its next generation sports-car in Frankfurt in September, but the company isn't saying either way.

"We're always working on lots of different stuff," he said.

The original E-Type is widely regarded as one of the most classic car shapes of all time. Jaguar has unveiled sports-car concepts over the years and they've instantly been dubbed "E-Type", such is the desire for a modern version.
